Individuals whose lives and work continue to shape Milton's local and national historical significance.

Moses Roper

Born enslaved near Milton around 1815, Moses Roper escaped bondage and became an internationally known abolitionist voice. In 1837, he published his autobiography, one of the earliest firsthand narratives by a formerly enslaved person from this region, and later toured Britain speaking against slavery.

Thomas Day

Thomas Day, a free Black cabinetmaker and entrepreneur, purchased Milton's Union Tavern building in 1848 and operated what became the largest woodworking shop in North Carolina during the 1850s. His work appears in landmark homes and institutions across the state and remains central to Milton's heritage identity.
